Oscar Velasquez and Rod Castle, life-partners, co-founded The Osito Foundation in July of 2008. Oscar and Rod’s passion to raise awareness for children impacted by HIV/AIDS began with a simple desire to help children. After learning about the millions of children impacted by HIV/AIDS and difficulties they encounter, such as sickness, poverty, discrimination and the painful stigma associated by having HIV or living in a home with a parent who is HIV positive. Oscar and Rod made the decision to act on their desire to help.

The Osito Foundation is a 501(c)(3) providing Teddy Bears to Children & Youth who have been

impacted by HIV/AIDS. Teddy Bears are known for their positive psychological affect on improving emotional health.

Teddy Bears are not as important as other social services such as: food, clothing or medicine. Osito is special because its core mission is not just the emotional well being of children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Osito knows its mission is vital to improving the emotional, physical and spiritual health for children, youth and young adults’ long term success in life.

By the simple kind act of giving a Teddy Bear Osito communicates, “Someone Cares”. From the beginning of Osito the Oscar and Rod had a long term vision not to just give a child a Teddy Bear but to reach into every aspect of the life of children, youth, and young adults impacted by HIV.

February of 2010 Osito made history by creating and hosting the first Children's AIDS Day. Children's AIDS Day was a day where children, youth, and families impacted by HIV/AIDS were the focus. It was historic in that from the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic there had not been a day where a city, a state came together and focus on Children and HIV.

The Governor of Texas Rick Perry honored The Osito Foundation with a special letter of support and Congresswomen Shelia Jackson Lee presented Osito with a Special Certificate of Congressional Recognition. Newly elected Houston Mayor Annise Parker who has been a long time leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS made a special appearance to show her support and to encourage the crowd to continue on in the fight to stop HIV. Mayor Parker also delivered a Proclamation proclaiming February 12th, 2010 Children's AIDS Day.

Oscar and Rod’s - Big Dream!
The Big Dream for Osito has been from the beginning to grow to the point to
  1. We could provide every child in the world their very own Osito Teddy Bear,
  2. Help the with social services such as Food, Shelter, Medicine, and transportation.
  3. Education so that HIV positive person can live independent of the government welfare system and handouts from others. By helping HIV positive people with job training, vocational training, and college education.
  4. HIV/AIDS clinics in every Latin American Country from Mexico to Brazil.

Rod and OscarOur big dream is to begin with “Osito Clinicas” in the capital city of each Latin American country, providing free HIV/AIDS medical services and education.

The Osito Foundation would purchase a multilevel building and on the first floor would be the “Osito Clinica” and the other floors would be leased to local businesses and the revenue generated from the leases would go to help provide the free HIV/AIDS Services.

The “Osito Clinica” would be staffed by local Physicians that were trained in HIV care by Osito’s Medical Training Team. The services offered would be free HIV Testing, HIV Education and Medical Care. Prenatal care and education would play a huge role provided the fact that the vast majority of women in Latin America breast feed. Breast milk is a leading cause in the spread of HIV in Latin American countries.

Dream / Needs List
  • Millions of Teddy Bears
  • Money for HIV Scholarship
  • Introduce us to:
    • Someone who would possibly donate a building in any and all Latin American Countries.
    • Business people who have a desire to stop the spread of HIV and to help those who are already infected.
    • Business people in the US who would like to help underwrite the costs for “Osito Clinicas” in every Latin American Country.
    • The people in Pharmaceutical Companies who can partner with us to establish the “Osito Clinicas”.
    • Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants who would like to join our “Osito’s Medical Training Team”.
    • People in the National and International Media in the United States that can help us gain National Media attention to increase the awareness about the millions of children impacted by HIV/AIDS, our mission and our dreams to be an International AIDS Organization.
If you have a desire or know someone who would want to partner with Osito to accomplish this dream please contact Rod Castle.
